What is Electronic Identification (EID) and How Does it Work?

Electronic Identification is the technology by which individual animals are automatically identified and traced by a unique number that is attached to the animal. EID forms a part of many national traceability schemes and provides important benefits at an individual farm operation level.

Use of the term EID (or RFID) in the animal industry describes the application of Radio Frequency technology to capture a unique number assigned to an identification device on an animal.

This unique number is commonly found in the form of an ear tag or bolus (see examples below). These devices contain an antenna and microchip where the unique animal number is stored.

An EID reader is used to read and record the number on the tag or bolus. The reader does this by energising the tag/ bolus so it can transmit its unique number. The reader listens for this signal. Once the reader receives the number it either stores it in memory or sends it to another storage device such as a SmartScale.

In this way, by adding EID to your weighing systems, for example, the animal’s weight is linked to its unique identification number providing immediate weight gain information.
